They made it four in a row last Friday night against host Lynn English at Lynn’s Manning Bowl. The decisive 35-12 win moved them up one place to the 12th T seed in the latest Division 1 power rankings that came out on Oct. 20. But the game was much closer than the final score would indicate, according to coach Rob DiLoreto. “This game was very close right up until the final few minutes,” he said. Jamauri Dulin’s 96-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter pretty much sealed the deal. The Tide enjoyed a slim lead at halftime, 14-6. “This turned out to be a hard-fought game, and I was very proud of our effort throughout it,” the Everett coach said. Tyler Freni (17 carries, 97 yards, 2 touchdowns; 3 catches, 29 yards) got the offense going in the first quarter on an eight-yard touchdown run. Luca DaSilva then kicked the extra point, his first of five in this game. Freshman quarterback Michael Walsh (6 completions, 110 yards, 2 touchdowns; 5 carries, 13 yards) then went to the air to account for a 42-yard touchdown pass to Jeremiah Joseph (2 receptions, 58 yards, 1 TD) in the second quarter. The Bulldogs finally broke through late in the second quarter to trim the deficit to one score. But at the start of the third quarter, Walsh hooked up with Dulin for a 23-yard scoring strike to regain that two score advantage, only to see it shrink again to one, when Lynn English was credited with its last touchdown of the game late in the period. Everett put the game away for good in the fourth quarter with two scores. Freni completed another scoring drive with a four-yard run to paydirt, before Dulin’s aforementioned interception return for six more points, which sealed the deal. Freni was DiLoreto’s offensive star of the game with almost 100 yards on the ground. The coach also singled out JerTide RB Tyler Freni is taken down by Revere defenders following a spectacular run for yardage. emiah Joseph and Jerol Zamor (2 rushes, 28 yards) for their offensive contributions against the Bulldogs. All of this winning is nothing new for DiLoreto. In his first incarnation as the Tide head coach, the 2020 team went 5-0. It was the COVID abbreviated season that took place in the spring of 2021 with no playoffs. But when everything returned to normal that fall, the Tide was also unbeaten in the regular season with a 7-0 record, only to lose in overtime to Methuen in the playoffs. In 2022, DiLoreto’s boys were 7-1 in the regular season, before beating Taunton in the Sweet 16. They, however, were eliminated by Central Catholic the following week in the Elite 8. Last year, they were 2-6. It was DiLoreto’s first season back after a two-year hiatus. But now with a freshman quarterback leading the way, the Everett native has the program succeeding, once again. DiLoreto hopes to keep the winning going Friday night, Oct. 23, at home against Somerville, starting at 6 p.m. The Highlanders are 3-3 on the season, and the 17th seed in Division 3. “Somerville is a very physical, EHS Head Coach Rob DiLoreto reacts to a call from the sidelines during recent action against Revere. Our first and primary goal will be to do our best to neutralize that running game. On defense, they play a very sound, physical (game). I’m very impressed with their team defense and schemes, and I know we will need to play our very best in order to move the ball against them.” Tide girls soccer ends postseason drought T he Everett High School girls soccer team (8-3-3) is heading to the postseason with a couple of more games – Lowell (Oct. 20) and Medford (Oct. 22) – still left on the regular season schedule, before the GBL Cup playoffs get underway on Oct. 27 at 7-Acres, which will also serve as a tuneup for the state tournament. How did they get to this point? Making the postseason has always been on Coach Dom Persuitte’s list of goals since he took over the program in 2022. “That has been my No. 1 goal since taking over the program five years ago,” Persuitte said. “It’s exciting that we (will) get SPORTS| SEE PAGE 15
