Coach Rob DiLoreto agrees that his team is now a confident bunch. “Back-to-back wins have certainly helped (them) feel and play more confidently.,” he said. “We talk to the kids often about confidence, recognizing that confidence can increase or decrease (instantly) based on performance. An athlete’s confidence rises when they perform well, it’s as simple as that, but I think the biggest factor in winning these two games has been the team’s commitment to working hard on the practice field. They have been competing hard, and we are just trying to keep that level of intensity up every single day.” The Tide enjoyed a 21-0 lead at halftime against host Malden, and there was no looking back after that. Luca DaSilva went a perfect five-for-five in extra points after each touchdown. Tyler Freni (13 carries for 93 yards; one reception for 11 yards, 1 touchdown) got the offense going with a three-yard yard run to the endzone. Freshman quarterback Michael Walsh (10 completions for 167 yards, 3 touchdowns) then hooked up with Jeremiah Joseph (2 catches for 41 yards, 1 TD) for a 38-yard touchdown pass. Walsh followed up that long scoring strike with another one, this time to Jamauri Dulin (3 catches for 41 yards; 6 carries for 38 yards, 1 touchdown) that covered 36 yards. Stevenstone Thomas (10 carries for 57 yards, 1 touchdown) scored the first and only Everett touchdown in the third quarter from three yards out. Walsh appropriately accounted for the team’s final touchdown of the game, when he ran the last 12 yards to paydirt in order to complete a fourth quarter long distance, time-consuming drive. Junior Philip Pimenta did his part to sustain drives with four carries for 52 yards. Sophomore Jerol Zamor caught three passes for 64 yards. But DiLoreto also wants to emphasize the work that his defense did against the Golden Tornadoes. “The entire defense played extremely well to hold Malden’s explosive run game in check,” he said. “Armani Negron was in on seven tackles to lead the effort. Godson Delisme and Jakari Jules were each credited with three unassisted tackles.” But in the end, it’s just the fourth game on the regular season schedule. Revere is next up, and will be coming to Veterans Memorial Stadium Friday night (Oct. 9), starting at 6 p.m. “They are a very talented and well-coached team,” DiLoreto said of the rival Patriots. “They run the Wing-T, both under center and in the shotgun. They are also very disciplined in running it, and their running backs are very speedy in order to do so. They go with two quarterbacks, so we have our hands full preparing for both. We definitely need another focused week of preparation, because we know that Revere is an explosive team, as well.” Halfway through, girls soccer continues to enjoy success O nly a close 3-2 loss to visiting Malden on Oct. 5 interrupted the girls soccer team’s unbeaten run of games over the last couple of weeks that included fives wins and a tie. Entering the halfway point of the season, the Crimson Tide are 6-2-2. Prior to the Malden loss, they defeated both nonleague O’Bryant (2-1, Sept. 28) and Revere (3-1, Sept. 30) at home, before tying nonleague host Waltham last Friday afternoon, 1-1. The rain made the game against O’Bryant very interesting, but the home team was still able to pullout the win. Sofia Arana-Quintanilla ignited the offense on a free kick from about 25 yards away. Her shot chipped the O’Bryant goalie, before it crossed the goal line. The visitors, however, were able to secure the equalizer 15 minutes into the second half on a corner kick that resulted in an Olimpico-style goal, according to coach Dom Persuitte. It’s a rarity in soccer, where the corner kick goes directly into the net without touching anybody. Brianna Santos ended up scoring the game winner late in the game from Johanna Flores. “Overall, it was a great team effort,” said Persuitte, “but specifically Sofia Arana-Quintanilla, Kayla Andrade and Gissell Lemus were major standouts. They were able to hold down their respective positions on defense and at midfield to (frustrate) the O’Bryant offense. Flores and Santos also stood out as strikers up front.” Two days later, Persuitte called the win over Revere “big for the squad.” “We started slowly, but we did get on the board in the first half, when Connie Paz Hernandez sent a nice pass to Johanna Flores, who netted her first of two goals in this game,” said Persuitte. “Her second goal came off a cross from Odalis Sandoval.” Persuitte then mentioned that his team came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, and did not let up until the final whistle. “The entire team stepped up, including Sofia Arana-Quintanilla, who added to her goal count on a free kick from about 30 yards out (to account for the third score against Revere),” the coach said. “Arana-Quintanilla SPORTS | SEE PAGE 20
