ABCC probes liquor law violations Three and a half hours of drinking at Saugus bar proved fatal for wrong-way driver and the state trooper he killed By Mark E. Vogler T ribu Mexican Kitchen & Bar on Rte. 1 North in Saugus faces possible action against its liquor license after an investigation determined the restaurant was the fi nal stop for an intoxicated wrong-way driver who collided head-on with a state trooper in a fatal crash that killed both men on May 6 in Lynnfi eld. Tribu served Hernan Ramon Marrero, 50, of Roslindale, nine alcoholic drinks during three-and-a-half hours shortly before the crash, according to a report released last week by Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker. “ Toxicological testing showed Marrero’s Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) to be 0.192 g/100 mL, over twice the legal limit,” the report noted. “Also present in his blood were Bupropion (Wellbutrin) 30 ng/mL, an antidepressant and smoking inhibitor, and Hydroxybupropion 100 ng/mL, a metabolite of that drug.” Thirty-year-old Trooper Kevin T. Trainor, of Georgetown, who died from injuries suff ered in the crash, “demonstrated exemplary courage and self-sacrifice,” DA Tucker said in his statement. “His willingness to put his own life at risk to serve and protect the citizens of the Commonwealth likely prevented an even greater tragedy,” Tucker concluded. Meanwhile, Tribu is the subject of a probe by the Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission (ABCC). The ABCC has issued notice to Tribu alleging multiple violations of civil regulations for serving alcoholic drinks after hours and for serving free drinks. A hearing on those allegations is set for next Tuesday (July 28). Once the ABCC completes its hearing, the Saugus Board of Selectmen – which acts as the town liquor licensing authority – will conduct its own hearing in the case. “The Board is in communication with the ABCC and working collaboratively in this matter,” Board of Selectmen Chair Debra Panetta told The Saugus Advocate this week. “The ABCC still has an active investigation and will continue to work with us once their investigation is complete.
