People came and went, but not everybody ate, but volunteers manning barbecue grills on Ferry Street reported they had given out 4,000 hamburgers and hot dogs. Attending his fi rst such celebration as Mayor, Robert Van Campen called it “a wonderful community event.”Also in attendance were State Senator Sal DiDomenico, various members of the City Council, School Superintendent William Hart, Fire Chief Joseph Hickey and Director of Youth and Enrichment Roberto Valesquez, who was there, in part, to publicize summer day camps programs and new afternoon programs.
