He also spoke about Lance Corporal James Taurisano, who graduated from Everett High School in 1964. After high school, Taurisano enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. and was sent to Vietnam the following summer. On January 19, 1966, while on patrol in the Quang Nam Province of South Vietnam, a soldier in Taurisano’s platoon stepped on a landmine, and Taurisano was one of several men who were hit by shrapnel. Taurisano passed away from his injuries the following day at the age of 19. “He was Everett’s fi rst casualty in the Vietnam War,” said McGonagle. Mayor Carlo DeMaria said his only major regret in life is that he never served in the military. “I always wanted to,” he said. DeMaria also spoke about the history of Memorial Day.
