He spoke about Garrett Morgan, who invented a gas mask prototype, Marie Van Brittan Brown, who invented the video home security system, and Dr. Daniel Williams, who performed one of the first open-heart surgeries. “If we would leave out slavery, we would learn a lot more,” said Charles. Redley said the syllabus should also include recent events, such as the murder of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement. Essofi suggested a more historical approach. “It would be nice to go way back into the black history and show these young black men that there were kings once upon a time,” he said.
