Rachael said her father always wanted one of his children to run Boston with him. THE EVERETT ADVOCATE – Friday, March 15, 2019 Page 3 DiDomenico participates in Immigrants’ Day at the State House the most vulnerable children in our immigrant communities, have access to the health care they need.” SOUNDS OF EVERETT Hold your nose, folks! M ore of the same foul odor floundering in the Church Street fishwrap this week, it’s called intentional decepS tate Sen. Sal DiDomenico recently attended the Immigrants’ Day at the State House, which was organized by the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Coalition (MIRA). Every year MIRA hosts Immigrants’ Day at the State House to hear from speakers about legislation, to speak about their experiences and to advocate for the coalition’s legislative priorities. During the day, Senator DiDomenico joined with State Representative Dave Rogers and Health Care For All (HCFA) in hosting a breakout session to promote a bill Senator DiDomenico presented in the legislature in January, An Act to ensure equitable health coverage for children (S.677). Thousands of low-income children in Massachusetts are not eligible for MassHealth and only have access to minimum coverage with strict limits on covered benefits, leaving them without all the care they need. Bill S.677 would expand MassHealth coverage to children who would be eligible for MassHealth except for their immigration status. Over 20,000 children would then have access to the care that they need. “We know that we need a comprehensive strategy to support our families and communities across Massachusetts while building the strong and resilient children the Commonwealth needs for its future success. To do this, we cannot leave certain children out simply because of their immigration status,” said DiDomenico, speaking about the importance of the bill. “Let’s work together to continue and strengthen our Commonwealth’s long-standing tradition of making sure all children in Massachusetts, including tion, trying as usual to make the mayor look like a villain and bully. At the City Council’s recent committee meeting, the mayor did a professional job of explaining to a whining Councillor Michael McLaughlin that his “know-it-all” public criticism of the Wellness Center – which has serviced over 10,000 residents since its inception at the old high school gymnasium where McLaughlin’s not even a member – is scurrilous. It seems McLaughlin has teamed up with the Church Street fishwrap and fake-news publisher who enjoys inventing fake issues. McLaughlin is Resnek’s boy. The two, along with the local money backers of the fishwrap, will stop at nothing to destroy the reputation of a mayor who has his heart and soul in his job. At Monday’s committee meeting, the mayor had too much class to stoop so low as to bully a “baby” Councillor McLaughlin, but the mayor had to defend the Wellness Center to stop McLaughlin’s nonsensical whining about a fabulous physical fitness facility that pays for itself and is enjoyed by thousands of members since its inception. After the meeting, McLaughlin mumbled about resigning from the City Council. You can bet he won’t. But, if he does resign he’ll do the City Council and voters a favor and take the scurrilous fake-news editor with him. Keep in mind that the real owners of the fishwrap have a vendetta against the mayor for opposing a 19-room rooming house on Ferry Street with one offstreet parking space. Resnek is a joke and very soon he will be exposed as the fraud he is. Stay tuned. The best is yet to come! Your career deserves an Encore. a Encore Boston Harbor is hiring. Sal DiDomenico recently joined with Senate President Karen Spilka and advocates at the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless Legislative Action Day at the State House. Every year the Coalition hosts a Legislative Action Day, during which they hear from elected officials about legislation, share their stories and lobby for bills that would improve the lives of those experiencing homelessness in the Commonwealth. Senator DiDomenico served as a speaker at this year’s event, highlighting the many challenges that people experiencing homelessness face. “Approximately 43 people IN THE MUSIC HALL Friday, March 22 MARYBETH MAES BAND are evicted from their homes in Massachusetts every day … As a Commonwealth, we must do better to protect those who are economically at risk,” DiDomenico said, speaking about his right-to-counsel bill, which would make legal representation during eviction proceedings a right under Massachusetts law. Additionally, DiDomenico spoke about two other bills that he filled that would help those experiencing homelessness: An Act to lift the cap on kids and An Act to lift kids out of deep poverty. The Family Cap denies Transitional Aid to Families with Dependent Children (TAFDC) to children who were born during – or soon after – their parents started receiving benefits. Because of this policy, 9,000 children in poverty do not receive benefits. An Act to lift kids out of deep poverty would increase benefits to families with children who qualify as living in “deep poverty.” DiDomenico participates in anti-hunger Advocacy 101 Training IN THE MUSIC HALL Saturday, March 23 TANGERINE Friday, March 29 Brian Maes 5:15 PLAYS Tim Archibald "Old" Tony DiPietro IN THE MUSIC HALL Saturday, March 30 KISS FOREVER Kiss Tribute Band 221 Newbury Street, Danvers For Tickets call (978) 774-7270 or www.breakawaydanvers.com Everett Aluminum 10 Everett Ave., Everett 617-389-3839 Owned & operated by the Conti family since 1958 • 57 Years! “Same name, phone number & address for family since 1958 • 61 over half a century. THE EVERETT ADVOCATE – Friday, March 15, 2019 Page 7 ~OP-ED ~ Councillor says different political agendas, false issues divide community B eing a city councilor is a great honor and I take pride in representing the people of Everett. Each day I strive to work with my colleagues to maintain meaningful representation for each member of the community I love and call home. Four years ago, I made my first run for political office, campaigning on the idea of bringing civility and a common sense leadership style to the city council chambers. When I served as President of the Council in 2017, I fostered a respectful working environment and sought to maintain harmonious relations with every member of city government. As of late, different political agendas, purposely hurtful and false reporting have sought to divide our community and have caused some to stray from civil discourse and healthy debate. Unfortunately, some have bought into the repeated falsehoods while in pursuit of forwarding their own agenda. These distractions are self-serving and only seek to tear apart the great progress we have seen in Everett. I will never allow mere propaganda to dictate the business we conduct at city hall. I seek to remind all that we are one team – and that team is EVERETT. Our city is on the cusp of a great deal of positive change with major redevelopment happening everywhere we look. It’s going to take team work and the putting aside of political differences to get us there. It’s is our duty Boston City FC to hold open tryouts at Harry Della Russo Stadium in Revere Sunday, March 17 B oston City FC will hold Open Tryouts for prospective players at Harry Della Russo Stadium in Revere on Sunday, March 17, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Lions technical staff will oversee the search for players with the potential to compete with the first team in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) and the Boston City FC II development squad in the Bay State Soccer League (BSSL). Players wishing to join the tryouts must register and complete payment at the Boston City FC website. A sign-up form is now available. All tryouts participants must be aged 18 or older. The 2019 NPSL season is set to kick off in late April, while the new BSSL league and cup campaign opens on March 30. Open tryouts have given opportunities to several first team regulars, including 2016 top scorer Homero Morais, defender Marcelo Cunha who is the club’s appearances leader, and 2017 regional all-NPSL selection midfielder Michael Rincon. Last year, midfielder Chris Gilbert and forwards Danny Apajee and “Reko” Wesad Al-Saadi were among those who emerged from the tryouts and saw action in the BSSL and U.S. Open Cup qualifying. Boston City FC plays at the highest level of the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) sanctioned league structure in the eight-team North Atlantic Conference of the NPSL Northeast Region and will call Harry Della Russo Stadium in Revere home for the upcoming season. Rather, he said, the starting line is where he feels the greatest amount of “anxiety and nerves.” “It’s one of those love-hate things,” he said. “Part of the experience is the journey to get to the start point.” Hall described the storied course as “exhilarating.” “It’s challenging mentally and physically,” he said. “There’s a lot of different emotions that go through your head.” He was not fazed by the cold and wet weather conditions that plagued many runners last year. “Whining about it isn’t going to help,” he said. THE EVERETT ADVOCATE – Friday, March 15, 2019 Page 19 Beacon Hill Roll Call By Bob Katzen THE HOUSE AND SENATE Beacon Hill Roll Call records local senators' votes on the only roll call from the week of March 4-8. There were no roll calls in the House last week. Hey Readers: Keep your eyes on the 2019 Legislature and the rough and tumble political scene in the Bay State with something that you will read every weekday morning. There aren’t many things out there that are free and valuable. But MASSterlist is a rarity. WHAT IS MASSTERLIST? More than 15,000 people, from movers and shakers to political junkies and interested citizens, start their morning with a FREE COPY of MASSterList! MASSterList is a daily ensemble of news and commentary about the Legislature, Politics, Media and Judiciary of Massachusetts drawn from major news organizations as well as specialized publications selected by widely acclaimed and highly experienced editor Jay Fitzgerald. Jay introduces each article in his own clever and never-boring, inimitable way. IT’S FREE! SO, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? BEACON HILL ROLL CALL RECOMMENDS THAT READERS SIGN UP TODAY TO GET YOUR FREE SUBSCRIPTION TO MASSTERLIST. IT’S EASY! GO TO: www.massterlist.com/subscribe STUDY BROADCASTING INFORMAL SESSIONS OF THE SENATE Senate 38-0, approved an order requiring the Senate Committee on Rules to study and provide a report by December 31, 2019 on the feasibility of broadcasting informal sessions online in the same manner and format as formal sessions. The report would include the estimated cost and cost effectiveness of the broadcasting; the recommended format; and additional considerations for the Senate in implementing this proposal. Currently informal sessions are not broadcast. Informal sessions are ones in which there are no roll call votes and everything is approved or rejected on an unrecorded voice vote. However, at an informal session, a single legislator can hold up consideration of a bill until the next formal session by doubting the presence of a quorum. A quorum is when 21 members of the Senate are present. Since only a handful of legislators attend these sessions, the session would be adjourned for lack of a quorum. Supporters said that some informal sessions are not the brief, quiet sessions that they used to be. They said major legislation is sometimes approved at informal sessions and the public should be able to watch these online. (A “Yes” vote is for the study.) Sen. Sal DiDomenico Yes HOW LONG WAS LAST WEEK'S SESSION? Beacon Hill Roll Call tracks the length of time that the House and Senate were in session each week. Many legislators say that legislative sessions are only one aspect of the Legislature's job and that a lot of important work is done outside of the House and Senate chambers. They note that their jobs also involve committee work, research, constituent work and other matters that are important to their districts. Critics say that the Legislature does not meet regularly or long enough to debate and vote in public view on the thousands of pieces of legislation that have been filed. They note that the infrequency and brief length of sessions are misguided and lead to irresponsible late-night sessions and a mad rush to act on dozens of bills in the days immediately preceding the end of an annual session. During the week of March 4-8 the House met for a total of three hours and 5 minutes while the Senate met for a total of five hours and 12 minutes. Mon., March 4 House 11:01 a.m. to 11:36 a.m. Senate 11:00 a.m. to 11:12 a.m. No Senate session No Senate session Tues., March 5 No House session Wed., March 6 No House session Thurs., March 7 House 11:05 a.m. to 1:35 p.m. Senate 11:05 a.m. to 4:05 p.m. Fri., March 8 No House session No Senate session Bob Katzen welcomes feedback at bob@beaconhillrollcall.com ~ HELP WANTED ~ Ring in the New Year with a New Career! * SALESPEOPLE * PARTS COUNTER * SERVICE TECHNICIANS * SERVICE COUNTER Earn Top Pay, Commissions and Benefits!
