Mary Ellen Wilson, age 10, was rescued in April, 1874, by Henry Berg and Elbridge T. Gerry at the insistence of Etta Wheeler. Her case was the catalyst for the child protection movement, beginning in April, 1875, with the incorporation of The NYSPCC, the first such agency in the world. In the News The NYSPCC continued to expand its visibility in 2019, and its message that child abuse is preventable, through media appearances throughout the year, especially during National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April. The NYSPCC’s Executive Director, Mary L. Pulido, Ph.D., is regularly contacted as an expert on the prevention of child abuse and neglect and domestic violence, as well as on issues related to child safety.
