OUR MISSION WE GRANT THE WISHES OF CHILDREN WITH LIFE-THREATENING MEDICAL CONDITIONS TO ENRICH THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE WITH HOPE, STRENGTH AND JOY. Photo: Lifted Creative Group

MAKING MAGICAL MOMENTS POSSIBLE SIANA & BRIGITTE I t’s our honor and privilege to grant our special keiki their one true wish, to be entrusted by an entire community of caring and committed partners to give a child and their family laughter and memories to last a lifetime. How do you measure the power of a wish when you feel a child’s hug or are embraced by a wish mom? We are humbled by the inspiration we’ve received in return and are grateful to each of you for the investment that you are making to ensure that wishes are coming true! We realize the impact of a wish when we hear the unbridled laughter of a young boy with severe developmental disabilities, able to play and laugh with his brothers in the safety of a customized playground at home for the first time. You know you’ve made a difference when you see the strength of spirit in a fiveyear old boy from an underprivileged part of town, who’s survived nine open-heart surgeries, acknowledging the crowd who are gathered to witness his induction into the brotherhood of the Honolulu Police Department as an honorary junior police officer. Feeling the undeniable love of parents who are transformed when they witness their daughter smile as they’ve never seen before when her wish is granted to meet the beautiful Princess Belle. We can see it in their eyes, bright and sparkling as they’re filled with a renewed sense of hope. You can feel the strength in their hugs as they feel the embrace of an entire village of friends and neighbors united to bring magic to life. You can hear the joy in their laughter as they experience their wish journey. Our keiki are the future of our community, and our wish kids touch us and inspire us every day to do everything in our power to transform the lives of others. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for everything you do to make their wishes come true! With our sincerest gratitude, Brigitte Egbert Chairman of the Board Make-A-Wish® Hawaii Siana Hunt President & CEO Make-A-Wish® Hawaii 4 2015 MAKE- A -WISH HAWAII ANNUAL REPOR T

A WISH GRANTER’S PURPOSE HEATHER PIETRAS - VOLUNTEER WISH GRANTER I n 2012, I was looking for a volunteer opportunity on Maui, heard of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and was ecstatic to find that there was a Hawaii chapter. Shortly after, I was assigned my first wish child during the orientation class and was able to meet with him that same day with my new and delightful experienced wish partner, Emily, who was 89-years-young. I knew I was in the right place as I watched in awe as this 8-year-old boy, attached to an oxygen tank, told us excitedly of his one true wish. After some good laughs over several months, while he was in and out of treatments, our little angel flew off to Disney World to meet Mickey Mouse and enjoyed a fun-filled wish experience with his family. Make-A-Wish Hawaii was able to grant this child a wonderful experience and give the family memories to hold onto long after their son had slipped away just a few months later. As a volunteer for the past four years, I have been blessed in having granted wishes to 15 of Maui’s children. It has been the most uplifting, priceless and profound time of my life. I don’t think it gets any better than being given the title of Wish Granter while the chapter’s wish coordinators orchestrate the details to manifest these wishes for all these brave children. All the families I have met are so grateful and appreciative of us, the volunteers as well as the Make-A-Wish Hawaii`Ohana, for blessing them with a beautiful gift for their child during these very dark times for their family. It truly makes me see and feel that wishes really do come true. I was even brought closer together with the entire Maui community during a wish for Ryder, a child with craniosynostosis, who dreamed of having a playground in his backyard where he could safely play with his brothers. Nearly 200 volunteers from the Maui community joined together to grant this incredible wish. When you witness so many hands working together, holding one another, for the sole purpose of seeing a child smile, the parents shedding tears of happiness, you genuinely feel love and think, “Thank you, Universe, for showing me my purpose.” Heather with her wish partner, Emily, and 8-year-old Xander, whose one true wish while battling brain cancer was to go to Disney World. Opposite: Ryder (8, craniosynostosis) wished to have a backyard oasis, where he could play just like other kids. Ryder’s wish united nearly 200 people from the Maui community to give his family boundless hours of happiness and joy. 2015 MAKE- A -WISH HAWAII ANNUAL REPOR T 9

A WISH THAT UNITES A FAMILY C HRISTIE - WISH MOM L Inspired by her son’s fight against langerhans cell histiocytosis and how his wish positively transformed their family bond. Today, Christie is a wish granter, making wishes possible for other children just like Joseph. ife hit me upside the head… and rocked my world. My baby, Joseph, was diagnosed with a rare disease called Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis. Ever heard of it? I hadn’t. It’s scary, and each day I battled not to be scared. Nothing is harder than to see your child hurting, in pain, scared, and you can’t fix it. Each of my boys had nightmares, waking me in the middle of the night asking if Joseph is going to die, or asking if Jesus will fix him. How could I comfort them? Our family had always been so close, but Joseph’s diagnosis really brought us to our knees—and what Make-A-Wish Hawaii did was give us a way to come back together, in a way we couldn’t do for ourselves, and we are more united than ever because of it. My favorite moment from our wish journey was just watching Joseph and his brothers play, watching them have fun. It wasn’t just about Joseph; it was about everybody. And I know this will impact Joseph. With all the pictures, memories, carousel rides and seeing Mickey Mouse… even at 3-years-old, I know he’s going to remember. Joseph didn’t ask if he had to go to the doctors once during the entire trip, except when he was getting a stick-on tattoo, but I told him, “No, this is not the doctor’s. It won’t hurt. This is just for fun!” There are no words to describe how much this has helped our family. It’s not just a wish to go to Disney World or to Sea World; it’s an experience that truly is once in a lifetime. It’s something we weren’t be able to do for our children by ourselves. After all the challenges we experienced, this was our time to heal as a family, our time for uplifting. And now we look forward and rejoice in this blessing. “AFTER ALL THE CHALLENGES WE EXPERIENCED, THIS WAS OUR TIME TO HEAL AS A FAMILY, OUR TIME FOR UPLIFTING.” 10 2015 MAKE- A -WISH HAWAII ANNUAL REPOR T

YOUNG LEADERS WISHING IT FORWARD R YAN CHAV OUS TIE, YOUNG LEADERS BOARD & WISH GRANTER I n December 2014, I was humbled to have been chosen to help carry the mission of delivering hope, strength and joy to our local wish kids. As an attendee to three magical Gala events over the years, I felt great admiration for the Make-A-Wish Hawaii mission and I was beyond excited to be a part of its efforts and have the ability to make a difference as an inaugural member of the Young Leaders Board. As a board member and current Secretary, I have had the privilege of helping raise funds to transform the lives of Hawaii keiki with life-threatening medical conditions in need of their one true wish. Through coordinated efforts and events, our Young Leaders Board surpassed our first year’s target fundraising goal by nearly double. Heartened by the mission, I sought additional ways to help. In November 2015, I took part in my first wish granting experience. Three Board colleagues and I signed up to help an 8-year-old boy named Leka discover his wish. Leka had recently undergone surgery for a brain tumor after he and his mother moved to Hawaii from American Samoa, away from the comforts of their family and home, for his surgery and various treatments. In all honesty, I felt nervous about the first meeting. I worried about meeting the expectations of the family; after all, experiencing his wish-come-true rested on our ability to capture everything he enjoyed and turn it into a truly magical experience. I was amazed at the energy level and enthusiasm Leka showed, despite how he felt physically; he was happy to share his love for superheroes and Disney cartoons and characters. This first encounter was completely life-changing. For the first time, I felt I could really make a difference to a family by uniting with others in our community. I could not be prouder of the progress that Leka continues to make in his recovery; his sheer strength is my true inspiration. There are two things I look forward to this year: the day we get to reveal to Leka that his wish is coming true, and my next wish granting experience. “LOOKING BACK, THAT FIRST ENCOUNTER WAS COMPLETELY LIFE CHANGING.” 2015 MAKE- A -WISH HAWAII ANNUAL REPOR T 13

ENJOYING THE RIDE B ethany is the inspiration of my life…Her story has inspired me to go on and fight. I’m going through a lot like she did and we have our faith to keep us strong.” – Wish Kid Madison A wish to meet Bethany Hamilton is more than a “celebrity” wish; it’s a chance for wish kids to connect with others who understand their unique struggles with childhood illness, who have coped with their treatments in the same ways. These wish kids have faced unthinkable battles, but have held on to hope by watching Bethany’s movie, “Soul Surfer”, drawing strength from her inspirational story and trusting in their spiritual faith. And through the hands and hearts of the people of Hawaii’s community who participate, the true Spirit of Aloha shines through. Madison and her new friend Zinnia faced new challenges together, but not the medical challenges they were used to. Catching waves off the beautiful bay of Hanalei, Kauai, with their source of inspiration, Bethany Hamilton and other pro surfers, Madison, Zinnia and eight other wish kids learned that the rules of surfing apply to their battles with treatments too; with a little help from their friends, they over come the scariest waves and said “aloha” to the sunshine. MAGICAL MOMENTS... FOREVER MEMORIES W hen I’m an angel, I’m going to stay with you forever.” Grayson, 3/25/10 - 1/23/16 We met 5 year-old Grayson in the first week of June, and his family quickly became part of our ‘Ohana. When this brave young superhero was diagnosed with a brain tumor, his family held onto hope and found in Grayson’s pure heart, warm smile and sense of humor daily inspiration to live life to its fullest. Empowered by Grayson’s bravery in the face of his condition, his family coined #GraysonStrong, sharing with the community his optimism and joy. Grayson enjoyed so many things – from animals to Legos; from superheroes to Disney; from Thomas the Train to Star Wars, but when his wish granters met with him the first time, his one true wish was clear: Grayson wished to be a Jedi knight. GRAYSON’S WISH TRIP SET HIS HEART’S DESIRE FREE. The favorite part of Grayson’s wish journey… Everything! He shot an arrow at Captain America’s shield; he met Spiderman, who tousled his hair and called him by name; and he defeated Darth Maul after rigorous Jedi training! Grayson, his mom, dad, and 2-year old sister, Olivia, did it all – with “smiles to carry us for years to come,” his mother, Gabby, proudly shared. Returning home, Grayson’s wish trip continued to be a bright light amid the challenges of his declining condition. “Little Grayson has graduated from his Jedi training, and has gone into the Light,” said Gabby. “But his wish experience was a chance to set his heart’s desires free; a chance to experience the heart of the people who rooted him on and sent him love. It allowed him to be the king of the castle, the captain of his ship.”This young hero radiated love, and the spirit he shared with all of us inspires us every day to make a difference in the lives of children like him. #Graysonstrong

Donovan, 13 Waipahu, HI sickle cell anemia I wish to be a volcanologist

THE WISH OF A LIFETIME I n 2015, Make-A-Wish Hawaii granted the wish to be a volcanologist to our 1,000th Hawaii wish kid. Donovan, a 13-year-old boy from Waipahu, suffers from sickle cell anemia, which can cause excruciating pain that can often only be eased by a full blood transfusion. His medical journey has been difficult for him and his family, but one subject always takes his mind off his condition: volcanoes. Donovan wished to be a volcanologist, and where better to study volcanoes than world-famous Kilauea? His father, Michael, recalled Donovan reading the wish letter that delivered the best news of his life. “You could see his face change as his eyes moved down the page. His eyes widened and when he got to the end, he looked up at us and there were tears streaming down his face. He had never been so happy. He couldn’t believe it.” After a short plane ride down the island chain, Donovan and his parents were welcomed by a surprise team of Hilo volunteers, waving signs with Donovan’s name on them and cheering excitedly. Donovan’s joyous smile hasn’t faded since! During five incredible days, Donovan met some of the most prestigious scientists in meteorology, astronomy, volcanology and geology, learning everything about volcanic rocks and craters he could absorb from inside the laboratory, across the lava fields and from the sky in a helicopter. Because of his wish, Donovan was able to discover more about his one true passion, inspiring him to dream big about the future and to imagine all of its possibilities as a volcanologist. A wish is more than a day, or a week; a wish is for life. Photos: Sarah Anderson Photography A WISH IS MORE THAN A DAY, OR A WEEK; A WISH IS FOR LIFE.

And the only person who can cheer her up isn’t a person at all. On the other side of Eity’s true wish is Kuku, a rescue puppy in need of a “furever” home. Together, they are better than they have ever been before. Eity now has a true friend alongside her, to traverse the road to happiness together. Photo: Darcy Fiero Photography
