builder NEWS Overtime Rule Takes Effect December 1st Small home building firms and other businesses need to be prepared as the Department of Labor's final rule to double the overtime salary limit from $23,660 to $47,476 will take effect on Dec. 1. This means that professional, administrative and executive employees making under $47,476 will be due time and a half if they work more 40 hours a week. NAHB estimates that more than 100,000 construction supervisors will be newly eligible for over time next month. Working with House and Senate lawmakers and members of our coalition, the Partnership to Protect Workplace Opportunity, NAHB has been spearheading efforts to mitigate the effects of the overtime rule. NAHB is asking Congress to phase-in the new salary requirements, as well as provide permanent relief from the rule's provision to automatically update the salary threshold every three years. NAHB and other business groups filed a legal challenge to the rule on Sept. 20 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. As NAHB keeps working toward permanent relief, members need to be prepared to comply by December FAQ Document and Webinar Don't Miss The 2017 Builders' Show With more than 1,400 suppliers, the Builders' Show is the place to see the latest and most innovative products and services for the residential construction industry. Fall-related violations accounted for 359 out of 899 construction-related deaths in 2014 and more than 20,000 citations in the last four years, based on data from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The trend appears to be continuing, and it extends beyond construction. In a preview last month of its annual report on general workplace safety violations, OSHA named the 10 most-cited violations. Fall protection topped the list with 6,929 violations for the year Meanwhile, the agency continues to crack down on fall hazards. Construction contractors have been fined hundreds of thousands of dollars in recent months for failing to provide adequate fallprotection equipment and related training to ensure proper use. Go-Time 2016 John McManus With 25 official working days left in the year, managers are testing the 'better, faster, cheaper' challenge throughout home building land. Counting today, there are 25 non-weekend, non-holidays left in 2016. No time like go time trying to get new homes delivered before calendar yearend. Mostly, a fair response to a challenge to most of our associates--even when getting work finished on time comes down to the wire--to deliver "better, faster, and cheaper" would be: "Pick two, that's all you get." So, as we come up on the Thanksgiving holiday break, I'm going to venture to guess that one of the things we may be most thankful for this year are the sparks of young leaders rising in our midst. Maybe, just maybe, the response to that challenge--for quality, velocity, and efficiency... simultaneously--might be, "we're on it." This thought struck me as we saluted a half dozen "Leaders" in awards proceedings at our 13th annual AHF Live Conference in Chicago. Nothing is more important to our business right now than our ability to attract a next generation of talent willing to belly-flop into the "cauldron of opportunity" of today's housing market. Ironically, these six individuals got no time for "remarks" as they accepted the Young Leaders honors during the award ceremony. Clearly, though, none were necessary. Passion, focus, tenacity, purpose, and an unshakable urge to help others was written all over their faces. Their being there in the spotlight for a moment said it all. Now is not just for us; it's for them, for who comes next; for the children. It's those "leaders" who are literally our organizations' future. Today. And when that talent comes along, as it can do, and has done, and will need to continue to do, we'll begin to experience what "better, faster, and cheaper" can look like in the real world. Here, Harvard Business Review contributors and leadership consultants Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman assert that the three imperatives don't necessarily self-cancel. Zenger and Folkman contend that some leaders work fast without sacrificing on precision, quality, and excellence. They write: We sought to identify the most differentiating behaviors of leaders who were rated as having high levels of both speed and quality. What did they do differently from other leaders? The analysis identified seven unique factors that appear to identify what it takes to combine these two seemingly contradictory critical leadership goals. Which of your "leaders" would you say show signs of developed ability or strong progress on these seven factors? • Provide clear strategic perspective. • Set stretch goals and maintain high standards. • Communicate powerfully. • Have the courage to change. • Consider external perspectives. • Inspire and motivate others. • Innovate. This Thanksgiving, let's be really thankful for the young leaders we've attracted into our home building businesses, and give them reason to want to turn that contradiction in terms--better, faster, and cheaper--into an operational mantra they've figured out for themselves. Construction Contracts: Everything You Need To Know Emily Peiffer - November 2, 2016 CMG's Passive House Mixes Energy Efficiency With Stunning Architecture Tim Murphy - October 27, 2016 Several years ago, Salvatore Zarrella was reading a trade magazine when he came across a story entitled "Green Without Gizmos." The article described Passive House, an exacting standard for building energy-efficient homes that had begun in earnest in Germany in the 1990s. "It was transformative for me," said Zarrella, a Stamford native and home builder who founded the New Canaan-based Construction Management Group (CMG) in 2005. "Passive House is the most responsible standard by which a house can be built, and yet myself and other builders weren't familiar with it." Read More Contracts are crucial components of the construction process, but they can be among the most complicated and controversial aspects as well. As the industry shifts to increasingly collaborative project delivery methods and adopts new materials and technologies, construction professionals need to stay up to date on the how the legal landscape is evolving - or not - to ensure their work is verified and protected. Our monthly series, The Dotted Line, provides an in-depth look at the evolving world of construction contracts and project delivery. Read More Here's How Millenials are Shaping the Housing Market Kerry Close - October 18, 2016 If you think millennials aren't buying houses, think again: Half of home buyers haven't even reached age 40 yet, a new report finds. The latest study on consumer housing trends from Zillow finds that about half of home buyers are under the age of 36. The market is also comprised heavily of first-time buyers: 47% of those buying and 63% of those selling a home are doing so for the first time. On average, first-time buyers spend $200,000 on their home -18% less than repeat home buyers, who spend about $235,000. Millennials are also buying homes that are only slightly smaller, at 1,800 square feet, than those purchased by GenXers and Baby Boomers, whose homes are on average 2,000 square feet. Building together: Women in construction look to each other for support Stacey Freed - November 17, 2016 When Barbara Armand, president of construction management company Armand Corporation, was losing her footing during the economic downturn, she knew she needed to broaden her market beyond southern New Jersey. So, she set her sights on expanding the business to New York City. That was when she received what she calls "a good omen" - an email from the National Association of Professional Women in Construction, a nonprofit networking group. "I bought a ticket to their event in New York City and was embraced by the leadership, encouraged to establish a presence [in the city] and given emotional support," she said.
