Annual Meeting & Awards O A Red Carpet evening at the Greenwich Regency Hyatt ver 270 members and guests walked the red carpet for the 2017 Fairfield County Annual Meeting and awards ceremony at the Greenwich Regency Hyatt on Friday, June 9th. The event opened with a cocktail hour and silent auction where guests mingled for an hour before dinner. Emceed by Gina Calabro, Fairfield County HBRA CEO, the evening included the annual membership update on the HBRA. Currently at 430 members, the organization has grown by 17% in the last year. President Chris Steiner- Steiner Inc., Sr. VicePresident Anthony DeRosa - DeRosa Builders, and Vice President Kim DiMatteo - DiMatteo Group, were re-installed for a second term. John Hertz - Hertz Construction was installed as Secretary. Also installed for a second term as a Board Director was Alex Shook - Pella Windows & Doors. 8 HBRA of Fairfield County | JUNE 2017 A check presentation was made to PSC Partners Seeking a Cure, the main charity selected to receive the proceeds from the 2017 Luxury Home Tour. Fifteen awards were presented to members for excellence in new home construction, land development, remodeling, allied supplies and services, and volunteerism to the organization. All were recognized for the accomplishments they have made within the home building industry and for their commitment to the HBRA and the Fairfield County communities. A live auction with Auctioneer Gene Seidman was held, and along with the silent auction raised over $9,000 for 3 local charities. Music and dancing followed.

T his most prestigious award granted by the HBRA of Fairfield County and named after the association’s founding president is awarded on a very selective basis to an HBRA individual or company member who has demonstrated consistent dedication and service over an extended period of years and has made extraordinary contributions of their time, financial resources and outstanding leadership skills in direct service to the HBRA of Fairfield County, and whose service had a significant impact on the growth and health of the HBRA of Fairfield County. Peter Fusaro’s continual dedication and service both locally and for the state earned him the 2017 Meritorious Service Award. As founder and President of Preferred Builders Inc. located in Old Greenwich CT, Peter Fusaro is no stranger to the building industry where he has been building for the past 30 years. He was honored with the 2008 Builder of the Year HBRA Award, 2009 Community Service HOBI Award, 2009 Philanthropist of the year, Vision Fund Award and Best In Green Award 2009, Best Green Energy Efficient HOBI Award 2012, Merit Award from the CT Green Building Council 2013, US Department of Energy Grand Winner 2013 and NAHB Green Project of the Year -Single Family Custom 2014 In 2014 Pete joined Sound Beach Partners team as a project manager. He has been a member of the Home Builders & Remodelers Association of Fairfield County since 1988. The Home Builders Association of CT listed Peter on its Honor Roll of Certified Members as a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist Certified Graduate Builder and being amongst the first Certified Green Professionals in CT. In addition, he is one of the few designated Graduate Master Builders in the state of CT. Peter has given his time and expertise to the HBRA both on the local and state level for many years as a board and committee member. Gary has been with City Carting & Recycling since 2002, hired to develop and staff a sales business model that has been second to none since. The recent merger with Tunnel Hill Partners connects the dots to the largest shipper of waste-by-rail in the United States, with transfer stations in CT., New York, New Jersey, Boston and Long Island. Gary has been an active member for many year and has served three 3-year terms on the Board of Directors, and is currently a Life Director for the HBRA of Fairfield County. He is happily married to Dana his wife of 29 years and has 3 sons Gary, Michael, and Dante. Gary is actively involved in his local church. ! K im DiMatteo has been in the insurance industry for over 20 years, specializing in the Construction and Real Estate industries, and is a Trusted Advisor to her clients and strategic alliances. Kim has been an active member of the HBRA for over 25 years and has been a chairwoman and member on a multitude of committees. Elected to the Board of Directors in 1995, she was an officer and served three terms. A Life Director on the board, when the need arose for a Treasurer, she was elected as an officer again in 2014 and is currently the Vice President of the Executive Committee and a National Director in NAHB. Kim is also on the CT State Board of Directors and the State Executive Committee. She has been honored over the years with the, Fairfield HBRA Associate of the Year and Women of the Year; Bethany Citizen of the Year and the Commercial Records Women of Fire. BUILDER SPOTLIGHT The Michaud Group Rob is managing partner of The Michaud Group, a company he co-founded with his brother Marc in 1997. Rob has been involved in residential construction and land development for 20 years with his own company and has developed custom single family homes throughout Connecticut with his own company. It was a sold out affair in 2016 and will no doubt be the same for 2017. Register here. Dear Jeff, Great question, probably not enough room here to explain it fully but let’s see what we can do. I feel like Social Selling has become more of a buzzword then a specific system or process. Let’s break it down quickly - Social - typically would mean online but the social aspect is more off the computer than on it. It’s a method of finding out common interest and using that to bridge the gap when you converse with someone. Maybe you saw on LinkedIn they went to the same school you did so you bring that up on your first meeting or maybe they support an organization you do so you converse about to build a little rapport. Easy enough. HBRA Bowl-a-rama October 24, 2017 The Associate’s Council is hosting a Builders vs Associates Bowl-a-rama at Nutmeg Bowl in Fairfield. We are looking to make this an annual event with a trophy to be passed to the winning group. So get your bowling ball and shoes ready. - signups will be announced in the coming weeks! The other aspect of social selling is how you are perceived online. Do you write blogs? Do you participate in groups? Do you have a good picture and description? What about Facebook? Twitter? Is all your comments and posts relevant? What do they say about you? We live in a world now where someone can research you prior to a meeting and see what you are “really” like outside of the meeting. Think about it, if someone looked at your Facebook would they want to work with you? Or would they see a pic of your chugging a beer on top of a pickup truck? Ok so we tackled social a little bit what about - selling? My question would be do you typically sell over an email? If so then yes go for it but if you typically sell face to face or at least via phone then the initial contact is simply qualifying the prospect. No selling needed. If you did “Social Selling” right then your presence online is what would have either sold them or not. Now it’s time for you to do the job which is qualifying that prospect. - John John J. The pace of 835,000 starts is a bullish sign for the housing market because builders are favoring homeownership via stand-alone units instead of multifamily homes for renters. BUILDER NEWS Moving up: How builders can address the needs of multigenerational households Labor Department Overturns Obama-era Joint Employer, Misclassification Guidance SecrIn a victory for NAHB members and the small business community, etary of Labor Alexander Acosta on June 7 announced the withdrawal of the Department of Labor’s (DOL) 2015 and 2016 informal guidance on independent contractors and joint employment — two Obama-era documents that expanded the tests for what constitutes a joint employer and an independent contractor, respectively. The 2016 guidance document arguably signaled DOL’s intent to increase aggressive enforcement of joint employment status in its investigations, and NAHB is pleased that DOL is rescinding it. Likewise, NAHB commends the agency because it placed undue burdens on our members to show that the subcontractors they hire are independent contractors and not employees. As previously reported in 2015, DOL issued administrative guidance on the application of standards for who is an employee under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The guidance document represented a fundamental shift by DOL away from the established common law control test (based on the control an employer exercises over how, when, where, and by whom work is performed) in favor of economic realities factors (based on the nature and profitability of the work performed and how integral it is to the business) in determining whether a worker is truly an independent contractor rather than an employee. This style of living, wherein two or more adult generations or the combination of grandparents, parents and grandchildren live together under one roof, has a long history. Whereas 19% of the U.S. population, or 60.6 million people, had such an arrangement in 2014, a 21% share of the population did so in 1950, according to data from the Pew Research Center. The more recent figure is up from the category low of 12% in 1980. Elderly parents moving in with their adult children once drove the trend. Today, however, young adults moving back in with their parents, or to not yet have left home, are the leading factor. In 2014, 31% of young adults ages 25 to 29 lived in multigenerational households.
