Mike Burton moved to Carlyle from Alton in 1962 and has enjoyed the small-town atmosphere ever since. Mike grew up with a very loving and compassionate mother who was very active in the foster care program and adopted fourteen children so his home was always a busy place. Burton attended Maryville University graduating with a BS in Accounting and went on to work for the Carlyle Sheriff’s Department for over 25 years, first as a Deputy Sheriff and then Captain. Along with his public service duties Burton has substitute taught at many of the local schools including Kaskaskia College. Residents of Carlyle will often see Mike getting his exercise by walking the City streets almost every day and answering constituent’s questions. His daily walks cannot happen however, until his longtime Pinochle game has finished. Mike is a fierce pinochle player and his trivia team is known throughout the area for their first-place finishes. Burton is also a longtime Lions Club member and this year will serve as its President.
