Okethia Fagan English “ As I have a hearing impairment I needed to learn British Sign Language. I studied with City Lit and then came to CNWL through their partnership with the College. I’m studying English, and want to develop my language skills so I can progress to a construction course. The College provides a good environment for people like me with a hearing impairment. We are supported by signers as the College works with City Lit. We are integrated in a class with hearing students - at first it was difficult to communicate but I have enjoyed teaching the other students some signing and it has helped us to encourage each other’s learning.” Nikolett Peteri ESOL Together with her classmates at the College, Nikolett helped create an exhibition held at Brent Civic Centre about the history of Brent’s Somali community. “ Working on this project, talking to other people who have learned English as an adult, I felt quite relaxed and it has helped me improve my spoken English as well as my writing. It was very enjoyable to speak to people from different backgrounds and ask them questions about their history. It’s been such a great experience for me, I’ve really enjoyed it.” 09 CASE STUDY CASE STUDY
