They’d show up at these events and hold court like the Malden royalty they were. Their presence is missed by all those who knew them, especially Carroll’s niece Carole (Lowenstein). • Speaking of Steve Freker – his star-studded 1994 MHS baseball team was inducted into the Hall. Kevin McGlinchy (1995 grad) was on that squad and would later go on to pitch successfully for the Atlanta Braves. Head coach that year was indeed – the man who logs more hours tutoring/mentoring/coaching the youth of Malden than any human in history – 1977 grad and MHS Athletic Hall of Fame President Steve Freker! And a grinder I would choose on my Y hoop team whenever he was available – not only because he passed me the ball, but he hustled his tuchis off! • Speaking of yet another Hall of Famer – Shawn Brickman – “Brick” held the head baseball coach job at MHS from 1984 until 1993. • Freck – excellent job with this year’s banquet, by the way! Where were the raviolis though?! I kid. Not an easy task getting people out of their recliners (me included) on a night in late November, but this is such a worthy cause and when Freck calls, you have to march. Freck toward your final score. You may sign up until January 16, 2020, or until tables sell out. Call 781-324-0218 or email Jean at jslavkovsky@maldenpubliclibrary.org for more information. wants you to know that if you could not make the event and would still like to contribute to help Malden High School student athletes you can contact longtime GT Club superstar supporter/booster Jeanne (Grasso) Marquardo (MHS Class of ’73 and Secretary of the GT Club) at jmarquardo@maldenps.org. • Speaking of GT Club past Presidents, check out this list of distinguished Maldonians who’ve made the GT Club the success they are today: Arthur P. Boyle, Jr. (who was in attendance with his lovely wife Helen and looked great btw), Richie Bransfield, Harry Chaisson, “Mr. Edgeworth” Dom Fermano, Roy G. Finn, Jeff Hurley’s bestie (said in jest) Jack Hussey, and my favorite teammate (Stars) of all-time, the late great Jerry Robbins. “This is the end, beautiful friend, this is the end, my only friend, the end...” speaking of MHS Athletic Hall of Famer and all-around well respected man about town – Shawn Brickman – here’s a short Brick story: When Malden reminisces about past baseball studs from the past 50 years or so, Paul Abbatinozzi’s name is usually at the top of the list. When Paul left Malden High School, after a stellar baseball career, he joined Robby “The Pride of West St.” Santo and John Montecalvo at Flagler College. He was drafted in ’88 by the Chicago White Sox, where he had a short stint in the minors. Paul was inducted into the Flagler College Sports Hall of Fame in 2009 (that isn’t easy!).
